Celebrating and inspiring
women playwrights,
in the UK and Ireland
The Women’s Prize for Playwriting was founded in 2019 by a group of people passionate about celebrating and supporting plays written by women, and dedicated to increasing the number of these plays being presented on major stages in the UK and Ireland.
The Women’s Prize for Playwriting is co-produced by EKP (Ellie Keel Productions) and Paines Plough.
The first prize will be £12,000 offered in respect of an exclusive option for EKP and Paines Plough to produce the winning play (the option is valid for 12 months). Other awards will be announced in due course.
Any person over 16 who identifies as female and is resident in the UK or Ireland will be eligible to enter The Women’s Prize for Playwriting. The prize will be for a full-length original play (defined as over 60 minutes in length), written in English, of any length and any cast size. Musicals and pantomimes will not be eligible, but plays which include music and/or songs, and plays for younger audiences, will be eligible. Plays must be unproduced, but may have had a rehearsed reading. There is no upper age limit to entry.
